If you are suffering from an autoimmune disease, or think that you may be, we know how difficult the journey and process can be to restore your health. For many, they suffer severe symptoms that affect them daily, ye t the cause of the symptoms is often unknown. After several visits to the doctor’s office, many suffering from an autoimmune disease still go undiagnosed considering there are over 100 different types that fall under the category. The same autoimmune disease can show different symptoms depending on the individual. Symptoms can also be very inconsistent with occasional flare ups and periods of no symptoms at all.
Two very common autoimmune diseases, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are both subtypes of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). Irritable Bowel Disease should not be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Both Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.
Crohn’s Disease is mostly associated with effecting the end of the gastrointestinal tract, but in certain cases it can affect any part of the gastrointestinal system. The lining of the gastrointestinal system can change in thickness depending on inflammation within the specific part of the gastrointestinal tract. The interesting part of Crohn’s disease is that even though much of the GI tract can be inflamed, there is still parts of the GI tract that can be healthy and free of disease.
Symptoms of Crohn’s are all related to the high levels of inflammation in the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms can vary but usually include:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Rectal bleeding
- Constant need to move bowels without relief
- Abdominal cramps
- Constipation
- Fever
- Dehydration
- Weight loss
- Loss of menstruation
Similar to other autoimmune diseases, there is not a definitive cause of Crohn’s disease. There are factors that can trigger the onset of Crohn’s disease. However, majority of the time the disease stems from genetic and/or environmental factors.
Ulcerative colitis is very similar to Crohn’s in the fact that it is caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative Colitis is specific to inflammation of the large intestine. Ulcerative Colitis causes the lining of the GI tract to form sores or ulcers. This can cause extreme pain and the urgency to use the bathroom frequently.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis are all related to the high levels of inflammation in the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms can vary but usually include:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Rectal bleeding
- Constant need to move bowels without relief
- Abdominal cramps
- Bloody Stool
- Fever
- Dehydration
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- If the disease has been diagnosed on a child Ulcerative Colitis can delay or stunt growing
There is still unfortunately not a known root cause of Ulcerative Colitis. Studies have shown that inflammation to the gut can set off the immune system leading to Irritable Bowel Diseases such as Chrohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. Limiting the amount of inflammation in the body can greatly help reduce the symptoms of these autoimmune diseases. Inflammation can often be a reaction to a food or preservative allergy and/or intolerance.
The foods that cause inflammation can often be a mystery and drastically vary depending on the individual. Seemingly “healthy” foods like salmon, strawberries, or spinach can cause negative reactions for some people and not others. At Cambiati Wellness, we want you to know that there is hope for uncovering the culprits behind your inflammation. You can finally have freedom and no longer feel afraid of food. We use a blood test to pinpoint these reactive foods that are specific to your body. The Mediator Release Test is a blood test that specifies food intolerances at a cellular level. Results from the Mediator Release Test will show you a list of the foods, additives and chemicals that are most reactive for you. You can learn more about this testing technology that we offer at Cambiati Wellness here.
