Are you one of those thousands of women who frequently asks herself, “Why am I so tired, even after a full night’s sleep?

We all know that lack of energy can severely impact our lives, and majorly affect the way we go about our daily tasks. Being tired makes us cranky, eat the wrong foods, and miss out on things we’d like to do. Performing some investigations, the Cambiati team has rounded up some answers to what could be the cause of this catastrophe. Here’s a list of our findings. Take a look!

1. You Don’t Drink Enough Waterwhy-do-i-have-no-energy.jpg

Our bodies are made up of more than 50% water. Drinking water only when you feel thirsty is not going to cut it. Waiting until you notice you’re thirsty means you’re already a bit dehydrated. And that can leave us feeling fatigued. Plus, did you know that being dehydrated negatively affects your metabolism? No, thanks. Being fully hydrated also means our bodies transport nutrients and eliminate waste more efficiently. To start your day off correctly, drink a tall glass of water immediately after waking up. It will revive your body by telling it: “It’s the beginning of a new day!” So drink up!

Many of us don’t drink enough water because we’re always so busy and we simply forget. Make it easy on yourself and get into the habit of carrying a water bottle with you. Luckily there are tons of cute options out there that you can choose from now. Treat it like a fun accessory and find one you love!

To help you get into the habit of drinking water throughout the day, try setting calendar notifications that remind you to drink water, or download an app that does the work for you. My personal favorite is the Plant Nanny – it makes drinking water feel like a fun game, and shows you watering a plant with every glass you drink. You’ll watch your plant grow and grow, and with that, you’ll feel your energy level growing, too!

2. You’re Not Eating Breakfast

Say what?! Listen to what your mother taught you, and remember that it’s not wise to skip your breakfast! Skipping breakfast is one of the most common mistakes adults make because of their busy lives. It’s natural for your body to feel low on energy if you don’t give it fuel, just like a car can’t run without gas. As a result, we use coffee as a quick “pick-me-up,” but after a few hours we feel worse than we started. Coffee isn’t the solution, food is!

Plan ahead! Prep breakfast the night before or do a simple morning shake. Remember that a properly made protein shake should keep you full for 4-6 hours. If your shake doesn’t keep you full for several hours then that means you are missing critical components. Check in with us if you’re not sure what to add.

In all honestly, putting together a protein shake takes what, 7 minutes? Resist the snooze button and bam – you’ve got enough time to make your breakfast shake! You’ll be glad you did when you feel more energized later in the day, and don’t find yourself needing the usual afternoon coffee run. We promise it’s well worth those 7 minutes to feel so much more energized!

3. You’re Eating Too Many Refined Carbs and Too Much Sugar

Make sure that even if you don’t have time to prepare breakfast at home, you don’t choose bagels or other simple carbs as an easy fix. Simple carbs and sugary snacks will only give you a short boost of energy before you start to crash. Not only do you lose energy, you become hungry earlier leading to mindless snacking. When you find yourself asking “Why do I have no energy?” after hitting the bagel bar, simple carbs could be the reason why!

Replace simple carbs and products that contain sugar with whole grain products, complemented by protein and healthy fats. Be mindful of the foods you choose to start your day off with and you’ll feel much better later on in the day.

4. You’re Not Active Enough

Many of our jobs consist of sitting in front of our computers for hours everyday. That number jumps when we add on the amount of time we spend on our behind once we get home and relax on the couch watching tv or reading a book. Although you’ve heard it before — spending so much time sitting down is not good for our health.

Not a fan or unable to exercise? Don’t worry – intense cardio isn’t the only way to boost your energy. Try morning or evening walks around your neighborhood. While you’re at work, set an alarm to remind you to get up every hour to walk around the office, whether it’s to get up to go to the bathroom, get some water, or parade around like the queen that you are, just GET UP & MOVE!  Simply taking a short stroll around the office allows gravity to circulate blood flow more easily, more oxygen moves to your brain, and you’ll feel more energetic.

5. You’re Eating Foods That Steal Your Energy

Do you ever need a nap immediately after eating? We’re not talking about how you feel after eating a huge Thanksgiving-style meal, we’re just talking about a regular lunch that makes you feel like you need to hit the hay. Do you find yourself reaching for another cup of coffee or something sweet in the late afternoon to compensate? That could be a signal that you are eating foods to which you’re intolerant. But, “I’m not allergic to anything,” you say. We aren’t talking about an allergic reaction, we’re talking about hidden food intolerances that make you feel groggy, bloated, or like you have brain fog. Not sure what foods you’re intolerant to? Taking an eating cleanse is a perfect way to figure out your unique food intolerances. That way you know exactly how to prevent feeling like taking an afternoon nap.

Something else that can snatch your energy? Overdoing the caffeine. If you’re guzzling down several cups of coffee a day, that may be part of why you’re looking around the office for a nice quiet spot to take a nap. Like sugar and refined carbs, caffeine brings you up — for a while — but then drops you down, hard.
